March 19, 2009. I am 62 years old. My son, Jason introduced me to triathlon events at age 59. I watched him do an Olympic distance race and I said to myself, “I what to do an Olympic distance race.” I didn’t know how to swim and I hadn’t been on a bicycle in 40 years. Once I decided to train for a triathlon my son worked closely with me and designed a training schedule for my age and physical ability.
I followed his training program (for 5 months) and I went from a non-swimmer or biker to competing in my first Olympic distance race in Las Vegas . It was the annual Pumpkinman race in October. I completed the course and came in third overall in my age group. This is an impressive result for someone new to the sport. My son developed a weekly training schedule for each event, swim, bike and run. The bottom line is, I followed my sons training schedule and when race day arrived I felt confident I could compete in this event. My training paid off. You may think I am bias because Jason is my son but his analytical approach to training was the key to my success. In addition, the motivation talks he gave me each week really helped and kept me inspired. And, as an added bonus, I got all my training help free. Jason was such a help to me (and he still is), that I actually recommended he become a coach. If you want to good coach have an interview and evaluation with Jason. You will be impressed. |
